St Albans Psalter: A Book for Christina of Markyate

st alban

The St Albans Psalter, made in the 1130s, is one of the great monuments of English Romanesque painting and has survived the disasters of religious upheaval and war in pristine condition.  The sequence of forty full-page miniatures illustrating the Life of Christ establishes their artist, the so-called Alexis Master, as one of the most influential painters in early twelfth-century England.  It includes 215 initials illustrating the psalms in a vigorously literal way.  Their inventiveness and c

Wickenburg (Images of America)

wickenburg

Once known as the “Dude Ranch Capital of the World,” Wickenburg, Arizona, has had many lives since its founding during the Civil War years. When German immigrant Henry Wickenburg discovered the Vulture Gold Mine in the fall of 1863 and put down roots as a miner and farmer, he also set down the beginnings of the city that would be named in his honor. Early residents and visitors included miners, ranchers, gunslingers, newspaper editors, and saloon keepers. Families made their way to town in the e

Smiling Coast of Africa

This is how they call a coast of Gambia – the smallest country of African mainland. Probably the quickest and cheapest option when you want to catch Carribean-like sun in the middle of European winter.

The country known today officially as “The Gambia”, before tourist appeared there, had been known due to its interesting but sad history. For ages colony of Portugal, France, England, even Courland – Polish Vassals (it was the only time when Poland had someting to do with colonies, although probably no Pole knew anything about it), it was a place from where probably hunreds of thousands of slaves where shipped to New World and Europe.

In sixties famous American writer, Alex Haley, visited the country as his family and main character of his book, Kunta Kinta, were coming from here.

Locals tricked their rich, black American brother a bit and showed him a village where, according to them, Kunta Kinte was born. To these days tourist visit Juffureh although it is rather impossible that Haley’s ancestor lived next to a slave factorium.

Remains of slave trade are one of main tourist “attractions” of the country, but fortunately The Gambia has much more to offer.

First – the seaside. Long stretches of yellow sand, not so crowded like elsewhere, give you a possibility of resting, getting quick suntan, playing ball games with locals or horse riding. Sunbeds belong to hotels and if you stay in one of them, you get your sunbed for free. There are “Beach Boys”, who work sometimes just for tips. They will provide you with a sun bed, play volleyball with you, build a sand castle for your kid or organize for you a lesson of drumming.

There are restaurants along the beach which cook well and relatively cheap. You can have one of traditional Gambian dishes or something international. And good Gambian lager called “Julbrew”. No pints, rather smaller measures, as it gets warm quickly, when you eat outside.

But there are more attractions than beach and sea. We recommend you to visit Katchikali – saint pool with crocodiles. One can even touch one of them. Its name is always Charlie and it is crocodile-vegetarian. It is being fed with fish and it is not interested in humans meat.

In Katchikali they have also small but interesting exposition about local history and tradition. The country although predominantly Muslim, still takes a lot from its African tradition and you can provide yourself sometimes with “Juju” – a kind of amulet used for various purposes.

Those who want more fun can go to Monkey Park, a piece of jungle which main inhabitants are groups of small monkeys. Perfect beggers, except those red ones who live high on trees and are afraid of humans. But their brown brothers, once you will give them a nut, will follow you till the end of your visit. They do not bite, only raise their hands to get a treat.

If you are ready for bigger emotions go to Snake Farm. Yes, it is a place where you can touch or even place a specimen of constrictor around your neck! No worries, the creature realizes humans are to big to swallow them, so it does not try to strangle… There are many more other animals, not only snakes, some of them quite dangerous, but those we can watch only from behind the glass or net. And a Frenchman who leads this enterprise is also very interesting character, one could write a book about.

How to get there? There are several travel companies who organize trips to Gambia. We chose two week package holiday of Thomas Cook who used to work for travelers on this continent already in XIX century. And a price was very reasonable. Last minute offer for a family of two adults and a child cost about £1350 and could be even cheaper, if we had decided earlier – becouse very late deal was in this case slightly more expensive.

For this price we got two week stay in “Badala Park Hotel” with breakfasts, flights and transfers.

The hotel is quite simple, although clean, with friendly, helpful staff, good swimming pool and placed in huge garden. There are a lot birds around, so the hotel is well known for bird watchers among whom Gambia is popular at all.

As you can see there are many different ways to rate and rank colleges. You have to choose the criteria that are most important to you when you are choosing a school. What makes a college or university the best choice for you does not make it the best choice for your friend, cousin, or another student. This is why it is important to research schools that fit into the criteria that you have set for yourself, for your educational goals, and for your career goals.

Once you are able to narrow down your choices based on your own criteria, you will find yourself with a much shorter list of college options to make a more educated decision on which one is best for you, your personal goals, and your professional goals. After you narrow down your choices based on your criteria it is very important to visit the campus for each of your choices. How you feel being on the campus and interacting with the students and faculty is probably one of the most important criteria on your list. Remember, you have to spend the next few years of your life living in this town and attending classes on this campus.

Good luck and happy hunting!

William Keleher : Not Forgotten

William Keleher : Not Forgotten

William Aloysius Keleher is a name that will not be forgotten, no matter what. Especially in the region of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the name will always live among the people as a shining star, a person who started from scratch, yet was bold enough to make a difference. William Keleher was a relentless worker who continuously strived to bring about a positive change in the society.

It was the year of 1886 when Mary Ann Gorry Keleher gave birth to their son (William) in Lawrence, Kansas. His father, David Keleher, decided that the family should move to Albuquerque, New Mexico and so they went there in 1889. William Keleher enrolled at Saint Mary’s Parochial School where he studied till the eighth grade. Due to unavoidable circumstances, he, however, had to quit the school and start working in order to support the family financially. He started his new life as a messenger for Western Union Telegraph Company, becoming telegraph operator later on. He also worked for education boards and development companies for a brief period before becoming a newspaper reporter (he also became the city editor for two newspapers). This was the pivotal moment when he was attracted to law. It is believed that events at a local County Court influenced his decision. He once mentioned that he felt as if destiny was guiding him towards the court. With the newfound spirit, he joined the law school at Washington and Lee University in the last quarter of 1913. It did not take the meritorious Keleher more than two years to receive the Bachelor of Laws degree and thereby, graduate successfully from the law school, who was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in the same year (1915). He returned to Albuquerque after a while and honored the post of city attorney. Later on, he joined forces with George Downer, practicing law till 1930. In 1931, he found a new partner A.H. McLeod. Together, they formed ‘Keleher & McLeod’, a law firm that would relentlessly practice law for the betterment of society for decades. Even after so many years, this firm remains as efficient as before.

William Keleher soared to greater heights with his literary works. He always had an avid interest in writing, especially history-related ones. With quality books like the Maxwell Land Grant, Turmoil in New Mexico, The Fabulous Frontier, Memoirs and Violence in Lincoln Country, he gained international recognition and historians’ acclamation. His first book came out in 1942, and the last in 1969.

William Keleher played a key role in settling the much talked-about dispute between the government and coal-field miners that took place in New Mexico in 1933. The Gallup American company was troubled with the Mexican coal miners’ strike, which was initiated rightfully after much suppression. The situation was going from bad to worse and an immediate remedy was needed to prevent apocalypse. This was the time, William Keleher and M. Mechem presented the “Mechem-Keleher” report on the Gallup coal strike to the government, who later on decided to settle the strike.

Keleher served the Museum of New Mexico and the New Mexico State University which was really worthy of praising. He also took the post of director and legal counsel in a few private organizations.

Even after death, Keleher is still inextricably related with the betterment of society. More than twenty years ago, the W. A. Keleher Memorial Journalism Scholarship was established at the UNM College of Arts and Sciences. As of June 30, 2001, the total investment value of the scholarship is eight million US dollars, huge by any standards.

Keleher died on December 18th, 1972 leaving behind innumerable well-wishers and monumental achievements. His legacy, however, have not gone to the grave with him. Instead, it has given him immortality among the people of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Researchers are unearthing more and more information about Keleher. Thanks to the generous donation by the Keleher family, researchers are finally able to have a better understanding of the society and culture in W.A. Keleher’s times. In addition, unknown or little known information about William Keleher is finally being divulged to the world. This proves that people have not forgotten William Aloysius Keleher and his marvelous deeds.

This is a new series (1-25) of Verse No. in the Bible versus the Quran.

Verse No. 25 in the Old Testament says: God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Verse No. 25 in the New Testament says: And he (Joseph) knew her (Saint Mary) not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Verse No. 25 in the Noble Quran says: (the hypocrites are) deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path).

————————

The verse No. 25 in the Old Testament is Genesis 1:25

The verse continues talking about the creation of the heavens and the earth, it says: God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

In the sixth day of the creation of the heavens and the earth God commanded the beast of the earth, the wild animals and the livestock be produced after their kind and God saw that it was good.

————————

The verse No. 25 in the New Testament is Matthew 1:25

The verse continues talking about the birth of Jesus; it says: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

The verse declares that Joseph did not know Saint Mary till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

In other words, Joseph had no union with Saint Mary until she gave birth to Jesus i.e. he kept her a virgin until she gave birth to Jesus.

Again, in the articles 18-24, Saint Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant and because he was a righteous man and unwilling to put her to shame, he did not want to expose her to public disgrace. So, he decided to divorce Saint Mary!  But an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” which means, “God with us.”  When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. Then, he kept her a virgin until she gave birth to Jesus.

On the other hand, the Muslims believe that Saint Mary, peace be upon her; is that

She lived and died as a “Pure, Untouched, and an Outstanding Virgin Woman”. although the Bible  insists that she was pledged to be married to Joseph, then she married him and then she had babies from him and then those babies are the brothers of God!  Also, the story of Matthew dismisses the miraculous birth of the Lord  Jesus; anyone lived back at that time of Matthew’ story would say that Jesus is the son of Joseph who is  the man of Saint Mary.

Verse No. 25 in the Noble Quran is 2:18,

Chapter 2 is Surah AL-BAQARA (THE COW),

Verses 2:8-20 are talking about the hypocrites

Verse 2:8 (See article 15) states that the hypocrites say: ‘we believe in Allah and the last day, ‘ yet they are not believers.

Verse 2:9 (See article 16) says: They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not.

Verse 2:10 (See article 17) says: “There is a sickness in their (the hypocrites) hearts which Allah has increased; for them there is a painful punishment because they lie.”

Verse 2:11 (See article 18) says: when it is said to them: Do not corrupt in the land;  they (the hypocrites) say: we are only reformers.

Verse 2:12 (See article 19) says: are not they indeed the mischief-makers? but they perceive not.

Verse 2:13 says: and when it is said to them: believe as the people believe they say: shall we believe as the fools believe? now surely they themselves are the fools, but they do not know

Verse 2:14 says: when they meet those who believe, they say, ‘we, too believe. ‘ but when they are alone with their devils, they say to them: ‘we follow none but you, we were only mocking

Verse 2:15 says: Allah shall pay them back their mockery, and he leaves them alone in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on.

Verse 2:16 says: these are they who have bartered guidance for error: but their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction,

Verse 2:17 says: their parable is like the parable of one who kindled a fire but when it had illumined all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them in utter darkness– they do not see.

Verse 2:18 continues talking about the hypocrites; and says: deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path).

The meaning of verse 2:18

The hypocrites are:

deaf, to the truth, so that they cannot hear it and accept it;

dumb, mute as regards goodness, unable to speak of it; and

blind, to the path of guidance, so that they cannot perceive it;

And they shall not return from their disbelief and error.
